Unpopular, but honest, opinion: it sucks to be in cannabis right now.
How so?
Well, despite all of the progress being made on an international level, when it comes to the nitty-gritty – the rules and regulations – everything feels stacked against the smaller players: the same people who are risking their livelihoods on doing things ‘by the book’.
With that in mind, who the fuck wants to play by the rules when it’s clear that those in positions of power regularly flaunt them – all too publicly – ? You can hardly blame New York’s operators for ‘failing’ to shell out on fines. And you can quite understand Canadian cannabis’ chagrin at the excessive excise taxes.
So what’s the World Of Weed to do? Keep on trucking. And speaking up. Say when something’s not fair. Push for answers. Ask ‘why?’.
Easier said than done… but perhaps that’s the point?
Greece has finally made good on its promise to make medical cannabis available – seven years after rescheduling the plant. The first patient’s flower dropped last week, marking what some are calling a ‘new era in Greek healthcare’.
With a general election looming here in the UK, it’s pretty clear that the current ruling party – the Conservatives – will be ousted. But can the most likely incumbent – the Labour Party – leverage legalisation as part of its manifesto?
Attempts to curb the State of New York’s unlicensed dispensary market have resulted in more than $22 million worth of fines being issued. And how much has been recuperated so far? Just $22,500 – little more than 0.1%.
Curio Wellness has been fined $26,000 by the Maryland Cannabis authority for a series of misdemeanours – including selling weed that had been in a dumpster for more than 40 hours at its Far & Dotter dispensary. Wonder what that smelled like…
Cannabis contributed more in excise tax revenues to the Canadian economy last year than booze and tobacco combined: CA$894 million compared to ciggies and drink’s CA$887 million. Perhaps the outrageous levy imposed on cannabis has something to do with it?
In the US, the cannabis banking quandary continues to frustrate, befuddle, and concern good honest cannabusinesses. But given that another senator – Washington State Democrat, Maria Cantwell – has signed on for SAFER banking (making her the 35th to do so), it’s high time to formally address the sitch properly.
