So here we bloody well are. The New Year has well and truly dawned, and after a week back in the swing of things it’s old news. But, the lobsterpot< isn’t.
We’ve been publishing this lil’ roundup for the past year on our site, thermidor<, and figured it was about time all you good folk here got a taste.
Each and every week, you’ll get six of the most important, interesting, and intriguing news from around the past week in the world of cannabis. This first off is extra special as it holds all the goodies that you might have missed around Xmas too.
The U.S. Virgin Islands have now passed a cannabis legalization bill successfully. And, even better, they simultaneously approved a proposal to expunge cannabis possessions charges throughout the territory. Now THAT'S how it’s done.
If you didn’t know, Italy’s military grows a large chunk of the country's medical cannabis. They do that to help keep the cost of the drug down for patients – which seems very reasonable. Well, they now have their sights set high, aiming to grow 700kg this year, which is nearly half the volume of the entire Italian medical market.
As any marketer will know, advertising cannabis products (no matter how legal they are) can be a pretty big challenge. Thankfully, times are changing – albeit slowly. Following input from the FDA, Google confirmed that as of January 20th, topical, hemp-derived CBD products with THC content of 0.3% or less will be good to advertise on their platform.
While it might just be a publicity play, Afroman’s announcement to run for President of the United States in 2024 came with a pretty great speech: “That time is now. Americans are suffering, and the status quo is no longer acceptable. Inflation is out of control. The economy is in shambles. The housing market is staggering. Politicians are corrupt. Bad apples are allowed to remain in law enforcement, amongst our noble and brave officers.” Right on.
In the UK, the weed startup taking us by storm, Dispenseroo, is finding more time in the spotlight with a recent feature in the Independent. The suggestion is monthly revenue has surpassed £1 million. Who would have thought there’d be demand for that eh?(!)
In January 2022, France temporarily suspended the ban on sales of CBD products, which it has now followed up on by completely lifting said ban. In fact, they used some very particular language which might serve other countries rather well. The institution “notes that CBD (cannabidiol), which has no psychotropic effect and does not cause addiction, cannot be considered a narcotic product”.
