Why do people consume cannabis? Medical benefits aside (just for a second)...

Why do people consume cannabis? Medical benefits aside (just for a second) – let’s be honest, we want to get high. Though the uneducated may sneer at the idea; what does being ‘high’ actually mean?

Is it the deep introspection experienced when viewing the world in an augmented state? Is it the heightened awareness of our surroundings – the suddenly noticeable ceiling textures or the musicality stemming from a dripping tap? Or could it be the fuzzy, chuckle-laden drowsiness that warms the very core of our being?

It may well be all of the above: and much more. So tell us: what does ‘high’ mean to you? Answers on email (say if you want to be anon.) to dave.barton@thermidor.wtf – be grand to put some of these in an upcoming post!

“I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is an herb and a flower.” Willie Nelson

Lemme See Some I.D.

Love it when cannabis proves the haters wrong – which it does (frequently). Hyperbole that dispensaries are selling to the underage crowd has been countered by new research out of California. Researchers sent young-looking consumers to some 50 dispensaries (picked at random) across the state. All passed the ’request for I.D.’ test with flying colours.

No Love From California?
More news from the ‘state where you’ll never find the dance floor empty’. Despite Cali’s well-publicised love affair with the Great Green Plant, it turns out that 62% of California cities and counties do not allow any retail cannabis business!

Buds For Brits: A How To

Given that the majority of UK citizens still don’t realise medical cannabis is legal, it’s clear that more education is needed. And even among those in the know, obtaining a prescription can be something of a mystery. But thanks to this handy guide, that no longer need be the case.

Zoomers Prefer Pot
It seems the much-coveted 18-24 demographic is bullish on cannabis as a way to wind down. Research from New Frontier data shows that 69% of those in the Gen Z/Zoomer/Digital Native bracket prefer weed to booze.

BC: All Legal?

Massive news from British Columbia this past week. The Canadian government has announced the temporary decriminalisation of opioids, cocaine, MDMA, and methamphetamine across the province. Starting January 2023, and lasting up to 3 years, those in possession of up to 2.5 grams of these otherwise illegal drugs won’t face charges – or even confiscation.

Instead, they’ll be given the option to be referred to the province’s health and social services. The move comes as a direct response to the alarming number of overdose deaths in BC which increased significantly in 2021.

Stand for Craft

Keeping our perspective north-facing, a new study coming out of Canada, shows that craft cannabis producers are being stung significantly by hefty excise taxes.

The report, authored by Dan Sutton of BC-based Tantalus Labs, argues that while larger producers can withstand the $1/gram excise tax, the impact on smaller independent growers is such that many could face insolvency within the next 12 months.
